Link Lock Bracelet : Jewelry 101

Finished Beaded Bracelet with Clasp

How to Make: Weld-Free Permanent Bracelet (with link lock)

Permanent bracelets are traditionally welded closed, creating a seamless, clasp-free piece that’s designed to stay on long-term. While this method requires specialized tools, there are alternative ways to achieve a similar look without the need for welding equipment.

In this guide, we’ll show how to create a permanent-style bracelet using a link lock jump ring, a small, secure connector that allows you to finish a chain with a clean, minimal appearance. This approach is ideal for those who want the aesthetic of permanent jewelry but prefer a method that can be assembled with standard tools and removed if needed.

Using a sterling silver chain and link lock, this technique offers a practical and accessible option for creating fitted bracelets with a streamlined finish. Below, you’ll find the materials required and step-by-step instructions to complete your own.

What is a link lock?

A Link lock is a jewelry component designed to securely connect chain or findings without the need for soldering or welding. Unlike standard jump rings, a link lock features a built-in locking mechanism, where one end of the wire clicks or slides into a small catch, helping hold the connection in place once closed.

Step-by-Step Assembly

Bracelet Instructions

Step 1

Measure your wrist using a soft measuring tape. If you don’t have one, use a strip of paper, string, or a rubber band.

  • Wrap your chosen material around your wrist.
  • Mark the point where it meets.
  • Lay it flat against a ruler to determine your wrist measurement.
  • Use a bracelet size guide to determine the appropriate chain length.

Alternatively, you can wrap the chain directly around your wrist, hold it in place with your fingers, and cut it to your desired length using wire cutters.

Use the Bracelet Size guide to determine how much chain you will need.
Step 2

Using two pairs of chain-nose pliers, grasp each end of the link lock. Open the link lock using a twisting motion until the opening is large enough to slide a finding, clasp or wired element onto it.

Step 3

Place the items being connected onto the open link lock. Then twist the link lock back until the end of the wire lines up with the hole in the locking mechanism.

Step 4

Grasp the ends of the link with chain-nose pliers. Push in on the open side of the link until the end is inserted into the locking mechanism as far as it will go.

Step 5

Using the tip of a pair of chain-nose pliers, gently close the latch down into place until it is flush with the rest of the locking mechanism. That's it, your bracelet is finished!

Tips for a Professional Finish

  • Secure link lock slowly and gentle so as not to mark the lock.  Ask for a second pair of hands if you're having trouble holding the bracelet and closing the link-lock.

Final Thoughts

This weld-free method offers a simple way to achieve a permanent-style bracelet without specialized equipment, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced jewelry makers. By using a link lock, you can create a clean, minimal connection that closely resembles a welded finish while still allowing for removal if needed.

This technique is also a practical way to experiment with sizing, chain styles, and layering before committing to a fully welded piece or investing in permanent jewelry tools. It allows you to refine your approach and test different combinations with minimal risk.
