Gold Filled & Gold Plated - Which to buy?
By Sophia@wjsco.com - March 02, 2017
Gold filled is an actual layer of 10 kt or better gold pressure bonded to a supporting base metal. It is then rolled to give thickness. In order for something to be considered gold filled, it must have a gold content of atleast 1/20th the total weight of the item.
Gold filled is the next best thing to solid gold. Gold filled products can last a lifetime as the gold layer will not wear off. Many owners find they never have to clean their gold filled items. However, it can be easily cleaned with mild soap and warm water.
Gold plating is a very thin layer of solid gold applied to a brass base. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating can wear off quickly and does not stand up to heat, water or wear overtime. However, gold plating is a lot less expensive than gold filled and is often found in costume jewelry.
We carry findings and chain in both gold filled and gold plated.
