customer spotlight- De Merle Jewelry
By melissa@wjsco.com - October 25, 2017This week’s Customer Spotlight goes to De Merle Jewelry from Layton, UT!
Owner and Designer, Teresa Stokes, started making jewelry from Jasper, Agates & Petrified wood that she found in Southern Utah about 5 years ago.
Once she learned about the rocks & gems in Utah, she started to learn about the rocks & gems in other states, and it progressed into her obsession.
When Teresa was a kid she had an insatiable interest in learning about her family, especially her ancestors. She loves history and her own personal history was endlessly intriguing to her. Teresa’s father told her of a grandfather several generations back who had been a French nobleman. During the mid-1600s he had to flee France as the country was plunged into civil war and thousands of nobles had been killed. His name was Edmund De Merle.
The De Merle family coat of arms had a blackbird as a main feature. She later learned that Merle in French means blackbird. Edmund fled to England where he was knighted by the monarch for valor in battle. Edmund’s name was then anglicized to Sir Edmund Merrill of London. So, to honor her ancestor Teresa named her company De Merle Jewelry and Design.
